Few studies have assessed how patients with dissociative disorders respond to treatment. The paucity of research contributes to the limited awareness of dissociative disorders and the lack of training for treatment providers.

The TOP DD studies represent the largest prospective treatment outcome studies to date for dissociative disorders. The studies examine treatment process and progress in the service of identifying the most effective treatments for dissociative disorders. Finding the most beneficial and cost effective interventions for patients is crucial because dissociative disorders are associated with severe symptoms and considerable suffering, serious impairment in functioning, and high treatment costs.

This work has provided empirical evidence supporting the value and efficacy of specialist, trauma- and dissociation-focused treatment for individuals with dissociative disorders, showing reductions in symptoms, hospitalizations, and self-harm. These studies formed the basis for Finding Solid Ground, a revolutionary evidence-based intervention for people experiencing complex trauma symptoms and dissociative disorders.
